how to start a music distribution website?
I'm planning to start a music distribution website for an underrepresented genre of cultural music that isn't main stream. Where do I start? The music will be available for sale as down loadable mp3 and waves.

- you will most likely need to design the website, as far as hosting it and paying for the bandwith with ppl downloading and stuff....man u might as well build ur own server and host it yourself I think, look into that
- Hi Anthony, Fortunately, we have entered into a time when the niche approach can be hugely rewarding. "The Mass of Niches", or so it's called. A product like yours can really succeed if you've determined it's something your niche will be willing to pay for. There are a few important questions you have to answer. First, how do you know people are willing to pay for it? Is it a hunch or do you have some evidence? If you are convinced people will pay for it, you can look into setting up a website. Web developers, especially in this market environment, are dirt cheap. I would recommend going through www.elance.com or www.craigslist.org. You have to spec out your project. To give you a rough idea, you should plan to spend somewhere around $5k on your prototype site. Note I said prototype. Don't go all out with a full-blown site until you have proof people will pay (courtesy of your prototype).. Once you have your prototype, you have to promote your site to your target market. This is when it's great to be a niche product--you don't have to spend millions of dollars to reach your market. Instead, go to the forums and other places in which you'll find the right customers. You should be able to reach them relatively cheaply. At the very least you should get a lot of info back from your target market, whether the idea really has as much potential as you believe or whether you should scrap the project.
